1:1 Coaching FAQ
I'm not a "fast" runner; can I still work with a coach?
YES, absolutely!! We work with runners of ALL paces, goals, and experience levels! The only requirement to working with a running coach is your commitment to yourself, a desire to learn and explore your abilities, and a love of running!
I live outside the US; can I still work with a coach 1:1?
Yes! We coach athletes around the world in a variety of countries and time zones. All our coaching is done virtually (through Final Surge, email, texting/WhatsApp, Zoom, etc) so you do not need to be in the same time zone or country as your coach!
How long will it take me to reach my goal?
No coach anywhere can guarantee specific results on a specific timeline (& if they do, run away!). What we WILL do is 1) assess where you currently are, 2) understand what your short, medium, and long-term goals are, and 3) train you as effectively as possible to help you reach the big goals you're chasing!
I want to work personally with Coach Elisabeth; how can I do that?
Coach Elisabeth maintains a limited 1:1 client roster due to the other obligations of running (ha!) Running Explained, including recording and producing weekly podcast episodes, creating educational social media content, staying up to date on the science of endurance sport, and more. She is not currently accepting new 1:1 clients, but you can join The Run Club PLUS Group Coaching to work with Coach Elisabeth in a supportive small group environment with weekly group chat support and monthly group coaching calls along with access to the entire Running Explained training program library!
What kind of training and workouts will my coach tell me to do?
Your training will be written entirely for YOU and be based on your schedule, experience, short and long-term goals, and what else you have going on in your life! Additionally, your coach will explain why you're doing certain types of training, guide you in executing your training effectively, and help you plan multiple training cycles with different focuses and goals!
I want to lose weight; can my coach help me do that?
We do NOT provide weight-loss coaching, and actively encourage all our athletes to fuel for performance! If you need more support than we can offer, we will refer you to a qualified Sports Registered Dietitian for help!
I need an accountability partner; will my coach do that?
Working with a coach can help you stay accountable to your training because you know someone is here looking out for your best interests and helping adjust your training to fit into your life! We will also hold you accountable for training properly, i.e. keeping easy runs easy, executing workouts, etc. However, we are not "accountability buddies" and will not micromanage whether or not you ran that day!
I just want a month or two of coaching; why is there a 5-month minimum commitment?
The 5-month minimum commitment for 1:1 coaching is in place because effective coaching requires time to see real, sustainable progress. Within just one or two months, making significant changes or evaluating the impact of training plans is challenging; a longer commitment allows for proper goal-setting, periodization, adjusting training strategies, and ensuring long-term success, especially with races or key events in mind. Additionally, coaching is not just about giving advice—it's about developing a relationship, understanding an athlete's needs, and helping you refine your training, behaviors, and strategies over time, which requires consistency and regular feedback over a longer period of time. How can I get the most out of 1:1 run coaching?
Be willing to communicate with your coach and express your needs, frustrations, and provide feedback (help us to help you… we aren't mind-readers!) But also remember that part of growth is discomfort; your coach may program runs or workouts for you that are challenging not just from a physical standpoint, but a mental one - that's all part of the process!
